ST.PETER'S CATHOLIC CHURCH BRIEF HISTORY

St. Peter's Catholic Church Langbasa started as a station Church under St. Theresa Catholic Church Ikota in 1991. A good number of Catholic Faithful who moved into the Ajah suburbs of Addo, Owode, Langbasa, Oke - Ira and Badore Commenced a House Christian worship the aegis of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal fellowship of Christ our life prayer group under the leadership of Sylvester Amadi. Members of this Group also attended Sunday Mass at Ikota The above group began to make conscious efforts during Sunday Mass at Ikota to identify other Catholic from the Addo axis who equally attended Mass there. This, actually was with a view to establishing the numeric strength in the area. By 1993, the group commenced Catechesis for Children and Adults who were praying for baptism and other Sacraments, and Celestina was the first Catechism to be appointed by the group. Satisfied with the numerical strength of the growing Community, the group sent a delegation to Rev. Fr. Joseph Akinlotan, the then Parish Priest to St. Theresa Catholic Church Ikota to explore the possibilities of Addo becoming Mass center. This actually led the choice of Amicable Nursery and Primary School ground which was duly approved by Fr. Akinlotan. Early 1996, on the 1st Anniversary of the Mass center the maiden Church council was constituted on the authority of Rev. Fr. Akinlotan Sylvester Orhiere emerged Chairman, while S. Amadi and Emma Njoku emerged as Vice Chairman and General Secretary respectively. In December 1996 after Fr. Akinlotan was transferred, Fr. Adeyemi was sent as the Parish of St. Theresa Catholic Church, Ikota. And he promised to give the Addo Mass center two (2) Masses, a month, meanwhile issues arose between owners of the AMICABLE school and the Catholic community leading to the relocation of the center to the one acre underdeveloped property of the Church in Langbasa Village. The group quickly rejected a make - shift wooden structure with iron steel there on to serve as Mass Center. The new outstation soon had irreconcilable difference with Fr. Adeyemi leading to suspension of Mass at the center. Efforts to have Rev. Fr. Adeyemi change his mind and resume celebration of Mass failed. In all these, the community continued meeting every Sunday with Emma Njoku as service leader. Entreaties were made by the Church to the Archbishop His. Grace. Anthony Cardinal Okogie to use his reputable office to resolve the impasse. Within 1998 - 2007, St. Peter's Catholic Church was a Station Church under Ss. Philip and James Catholic Church New Road Lekki. And towards the middle of 1998, Late Rev. Fr. Patrick Adegbite extended his evangelical outreach to the Ajah/Addo axis, thus paving the way for the eventual handover of his outstation by His. Grace. to the supervision of F. Adegbite. On June 29th, 1998 and he celebrated his maiden Mass at the make chiefs structure in Langbasa which was on the feast of St. Peter and he named the Church St. Peter's. The present site was acquired by him also in November/December 1999. In 2007 the Father's house was successfully completed and was unvailed by His. Eninence Anthony Cardinal Okogie on 18th August, 2007 during his third Pastoral Visit to lekki Churches.
